An overview of the Victorian gas industry

The Victorian gas supply chain starts with the exploration and production of natural gas by producers. Once produced, gas is transported at high pressure through transmission pipelines, with pressure reduced before it enters local distribution networks.

Distribution companies such as MG deliver gas from the transmission network, through a network of lower pressure, smaller diameter, pipelines to customers.

Gas is purchased from producers by retailers, who on sell it to industrial, commercial and residential customers. The primary relationship between a customer and the gas network is managed by the retailer; these are the businesses that send and manage gas bills. Customers can choose which retailer they wish to work with – a number of different gas retailers operate in each geographic area.
